Thé Archives: March 2002

The past few nights, I've been reading a bedtime story to baby before we go to sleep. So far we've covered The Cat In The Hat, The Best Nest, and Tawny Scrawny Lion.

Judging by baby activity during reading, baby appears to like Dr. Seuss the best. Time to dig out some more of the children's books that have been sitting in boxes since we moved...

Today the baby kicked hard enough for Geoff to feel it! :D There have been a couple of times when s/he has kicked this hard, but this is the first time I was able to grab his hand in time for him to experience it.

The poll question was: What do you think of the name Amélie, if the baby is a girl?

The results were:
Pretty! 11 (55%)
Um. How's that pronounced? 6 (30%)
She'll be scarred for life! 3 (15%)

We've decided against it, because it makes sense to name the kid something that is (at least somewhat) phonetically pronouncable in the area we live in. So I took the poll down.

In other news, my belly officially protrudes past my breasts -- I put a new picture up. :)

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, I'll be working for a new client downtown. Then this weekend Geoff & I are driving to Syracuse to get Sharou from Joyce-the-breeder. She's going to be at a dog-show there. We're taking Jake with us; we're going to drive halfway up on Friday, then the rest Saturday morning. After we get Sharou, we'll drive back to the same hotel, then drive the rest of the way home on Sunday.

On Monday, April 1, and Wednesday, April 3, I'll probably be downtown again. I have an ultrasound scheduled for Tuesday. Hopefully the baby will cooperate, and we'll be able to know whether it's a boy or a girl. Geoff doesn't really care either way, but I want to know as much as anyone can tell me.

After all this activity, I think I'll need a week to recover.

Then I have an endocrinologist appointment on April 11, and an ob appointment on April 12.

Mostly I'm putting this down here so that it's in yet another place, and that way maybe I won't forget all of it. ;)

We're not going to use Amélie ... so you can stop voting against it now. :Ţ

At this point, we're considering Jordan for a boy. We both like Megan for a girl, but it's something like #8 on the list of "most popular names". So we're still working on girl names.

No real news other than that ... :)

And now -- the answer to the question you've all been asking yourselves: How does Chrissy get enough protein?

The answer is that I only need ten more grams of protein than I was already getting. The recommended daily allowance for women is 50 grams; pregnant women need 60.

Peanut butter, dairy products, and eggs make up most of my protein intake. The occasional Luna bar (a power bar) also helps -- they've got 10 grams of protein each.

And today I found this page at babycenter.com, which has even more protein options.

Consumer Reports has a page with lots o' links, some of them to public resources. We'll probably end up subscribing in order to read brand recommendations, but the "Buying for Baby" list seems to have some good (if generic) advice also.

We're open to suggestions from those who have gone before, so if you're reading this & you have something to add to what they said, feel free to email me. :)

Also -- when did a "playpen" become a "portable play yard"? Isn't it still just baby jail?

Tonight I bought pants! And shorts, and a shirt, and black tights -- who ever thought about maternity tights? -- and some underclothing.

Now I don't have to run around naked anymore.

Just kidding! -- I'll still run around naked!

(Ok, no really -- I don't run around naked. The kitchen has this huge window that doesn't have curtains.)

Note the pictures to the left ... it feels really odd having a waistline above my belly-button.

This afternoon I spent about 10 minutes feeling Baby bumping around inside me. I felt like a glass window must feel when a butterfly bumps up against it.

In two weeks I have an appointment with Dr. Match to go over my bloodwork.

In four weeks I'll have another sonogram, and if Baby is cooperative, we might be able to know the sex. Yes, I want to know; I'm not good at waiting. I realize that they can be wrong -- but still -- I want to know as much as anyone can tell me.

Two weeks after that I have another appointment with Rachel, the midwife.

Who realized that being pregnant was going to fill my social calendar this way?

We're planning to paint the nursery in muted earth-tones, with a classic Winnie-the-Pooh theme. First we have to move all of the bookshelves out of there, because when we moved in, we didn't realize that room would *become* a nursery. Before we can move the shelves, we have to move all of the boxes of books that are blocking them ... Note that while I say "we", I really mean "Geoff". I will not be moving heavy boxes or bookshelves.

We've talked a little bit about potential names, but we haven't made any decisions. We both tend to lean toward French names that "typical" Americans would mangle ... I'd rather not subject this kid to having to spell her/his first name every time s/he's on the phone -- we already get that with our *last* name.
